The Power of Private Surf Lessons
If you’ve ever stood on the beach watching other people catch perfect Malibu waves and thought, I wish I could do that, private surf lessons are your fast track to getting there.
In a place like Malibu — where the ocean is your classroom and the waves are world-famous — personalized instruction makes all the difference.
At Always Summer Surf School, we specialize in private surf lessons at Zuma Beach, designed for rapid progress. Whether it’s your first lesson or you’re working to refine your pop-up and turns, our one-on-one approach gets you there faster and safer.
Other schools like Malibu Surf Coach and Cali Surf School also offer private sessions, but our instructors live and surf Malibu every day. That local knowledge means we can time lessons around the ideal tides, winds, and sandbar conditions that make Zuma so forgiving for beginners.
You’ll learn more in two private lessons than in five group sessions anywhere else.
Why One-on-One Surf Coaching Works So Well
Group lessons are great for fun and energy — but if your goal is to learn fast, one-on-one coaching is unbeatable.
Here’s why:
🎯 Personalized Feedback
Every person’s balance, stance, and timing are different. In private sessions, your instructor focuses entirely on you — correcting your form, adjusting your paddling, and explaining what’s working (and what’s not) after each wave.
🏄 Maximum Wave Time
In group lessons, you might wait your turn between waves. In a private lesson, it’s non-stop. You’re catching wave after wave with no downtime — dramatically increasing your learning curve.
🧠 Mind-Muscle Memory
Surfing is 70% muscle memory and 30% ocean awareness.Private sessions accelerate both by repeating technique until it’s automatic. You’ll build consistency faster than in a mixed-level group.
🌊 Ocean Reading Skills
Zuma Beach changes hour by hour — wind direction, swell angle, tide height.Your coach will teach you how to read the water like a local, a skill that separates beginners from surfers who actuallyunderstand the ocean.
Section 3: Why Zuma Beach Is Perfect for Private Lessons
Most people picture Surfrider Beach when they think “Malibu surfing.” But for learning, Zuma Beach is far better.
It’s long, wide, and uncrowded. That means your instructor can pick the perfect sandbar for your level — one with slow, clean waves that let you practice your takeoffs safely.
Compare that to Surfrider, where advanced locals compete for every wave. That’s why even competitors like Cali Surf School sometimes bring beginners to Zuma when conditions are right.
Always Summer Surf School is based here year-round — so you get the best conditions, the best tides, and a local guide who knows every peak.
What Happens in a Private Lesson
A typical private surf lesson with Always Summer Surf School lasts 90–120 minutes.
Step 1 – Warm-up & Land Training
You’ll start with a 10-minute warm-up and a quick review of ocean safety. Then we’ll teach the pop-up technique on the sand until it feels natural.
Step 2 – Paddling Out
Your instructor helps you identify safe channels and paddling angles. You’ll learn efficient paddling form and positioning to catch waves smoothly.
Step 3 – Catching Waves
Once you’re ready, your instructor positions you into perfect beginner waves — not too big, not too small. You’ll practice standing up, adjusting balance, and carving basic turns.
Step 4 – Real-Time Coaching
Every ride ends with instant feedback. If you want, we can record clips using a GoPro or drone so you can analyze your form later — a favorite among guests from Hotel Bel-Air and Shutters on the Beach who want keepsake videos.
Step 5 – Debrief
We wrap up with tips for improvement and suggestions for your next session, whether you want to move to bigger waves or just enjoy smoother rides.
Section 5: How Private Lessons Compare to Group Lessons
Private lessons are especially popular with couples, families, and executives who want privacy and faster skill progression.
Competitor Comparison
Malibu Surf Coach
They focus on one-on-one coaching too, often at Surfrider Beach. While their instructors are experienced, the crowds at that break make it tough for beginners to progress quickly.
Cali Surf School
Their instructors rotate between LA and OC beaches. They’re solid coaches, but not all are Malibu locals — which means less intimate knowledge of Zuma’s conditions.
Malibu Makos Surf Club
Mostly kids’ camps and large group sessions. Great for energy and social vibe, but not ideal if your goal is personalized performance coaching.
Always Summer Surf School, on the other hand, gives you the intimacy of a private coach with the flexibility and friendliness of a local Malibu team — all right on Zuma’s safest peaks.
Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Private Lesson
Show up 15 minutes early to stretch and check surf conditions.
Bring a towel and sunscreen — we provide boards, wetsuits, and wax.
Eat a light meal an hour before your lesson.
Ask for GoPro footage — you’ll learn faster watching yourself.
Book morning sessions for the cleanest waves.
